The most user friendly source I have for understanding and working with change is "Managing Transitions, Making the Most of Change" by William Bridges. He, in very understandable terms, outlines the three (3) phases individuals go through when faced with moving to something new:
1. Letting Go - facing the ending - dealing with loss
2. In-between time - the Neutral Zone - realignment takes place
3. New Beginning - a new sense of purpose
He not only explains these in-depth, but supplies specifics for how to manage each phase.

Other than the book, much of Bridges work is available on the internet. I would highly recommend anyone facing the challenge of leading a major change to consult his work!
