Location:  Home of Pam Vogel, 2430 Terrace Road, Des Moines, IA  50312; Home Phone – 515.401.6500 and Cell Phone – 515.238.4108

Directions: Regardless of which direction you come into Des Moines, once you are on the freeway (I-235), exit south on 31st Street (marked Terrace Hill). Continue to go south several blocks until you come to Grand Avenue. At Grand Avenue, turn left and go east. You will go past the 28th street intersection and then go about two blocks more. You will see Terrace Hill on your right. Just past the foot of Terrace Hill, you will see a gated entrance/drive to the Governor's mansion, marked by brick pillars. The street just immediately past this drive is Terrace Road. Turn right on Terrace Road. You will drive around behind Terrace Hill and then will be headed west and downhill. Pam’s home is on the left side, about 6 or 7 houses down - 2430 Terrace Road. It's tan stucco with brick on the bottom and a hedge along the street side. You will need to park on the south side of the street, anywhere in front of Pam’s home or that of her neighbors.

  • Welcome and Call to Order
  • Welcome Activity:  Share name, role, and “value” Iowa ASCD has provided you in your career and/or a “celebration” of accomplishment of Iowa ASCD you have recognized since you have been on the board.

II .   Strategic Plan – 2012 –  (10:20  - 11:30 A.M.) (Executive Director, Lou Howell) 

We ask all directors to review in advance the first iteration of the strategic plan, prepared to share ideas within team and open discussion as the meeting.

  • Howell will provide brief overview and asks all directors to review in advance, prepared to share ideas within team and open discussion at the meeting. (10 minutes)
  • Summer Retreat Teams will have 20 minutes to work as a team to review their “section of the plan” in order to provide feedback, including what’s right, what’s missing, what should be extended, what should be deleted. 
  • Teams and individuals will have 20 minutes to share with board what’s right, what’s missing, what should be extended, what should be deleted.   (20 minutes)
  • Final Answer:  What is one thing that you as an individual director see as “a must” if  we are to become “the source in Iowa for instructional leadership, translating research into daily practice”? (10 minutes)
  • Next Steps:  Howell will summarize themes of conversations. (“Final” iteration will be provided to directors in advance of December meeting. (10 minutes)

III .   Business Meeting with Working Lunch (11:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. and 2:30 – 3:40 P.M.) (President, Jason Ellingson)

Several of these items will be written reports with very brief highlights by the director in charge.  Others will require discussion.  Note indications behind posted reports.

V.     Professional Learning for Iowa ASCD Board of Directors:  Advocacy and Influence with House Representative Cindy Winckler  (12:30 – 2:30 P.M.)

Intended Outcome:  Board of Directors will have increased skills, knowledge, and aspiration to advocate for success of students and their educators with legislators as well as others influencing education.

Due to death of Cindy Winckler's brother (He lost the fight with lung cancer on Sunday), she will not be able to attend the meeting.  However, Pam and Susan will take us through a process to identify our legislative agenda for 2013.
