Implementing RtI as a state will require state-led and supported training on understanding the Iowa Core standards, using data to understand the effectiveness of local instructional practices, and evidence-based practices to supplement universal instruction, provide targeted interventions that will impact learning, and for some students, provide intensive instruction designed to get all students to the performance level needed to engage grade-level content and be successful on grade-level achievement standards.

 Myth or Reality?  This session will provide the details that districts need to start to build the framework for increased student learning.  Timelines, definitions, belief statements, and expectations will be shared.

When many schools implement the RtI framework, the first - and sometimes the only - focus of attention is on students who are at risk for failure. Perhaps we forget that gifted students are at risk for failure as well: failure to meet their potential. If we're truly concerned with appropriate curriculum and instruction and high-level outcomes for ALL students, our RtI discussions, data analysis, and intervention planning must include those students significantly discrepant beyond grade level. This session will provide best practices and resources for advanced and gifted students in the RtI framework.

Iowa once stood as one of the highest performing school systems in the United States, if not the world.  Dr. Jason Glass, Director of the Iowa Department of Education, will discuss a vision for how Iowa might reclaim its place among the world’s highest performing systems through improved educator effectiveness, systems alignment, and innovation.  The presentation will include interactive components so be prepared to participate!

With increasing accountability demands, teachers are expected to “do” more in their classroom.  How the Governor’s Blueprint, the Iowa Core, the ESEA waiver, and RtI mesh to meet those demands is the topic of this session.

"Are You Using the Right 'Drivers' to Assure Success of RTI in Your Schools?"  Garden Room

Join us in learning what research and best practices say it takes to assure your students and system are aligned for success.  We will explore the research of Michael Fullan ("Choosing the Wrong Drivers for School Reform," "Learning Is the Work") as well as the international work shared in the McKinsey Report, "How the World's Best-Performing School Systems Come Out on Top."  We will also look at Chenoweth and Theokas's research shared in Getting It Done:  Leading Academic Success in Unexpected Schools. And, of course, we will check the alignment of the Governor's recommendations for World-Class Schools with this research. (Note:  Participants will have a tool to check what's driving their work.)

This presentation will focus on the role and responsibilities of the elementary administrator, guidance counselor, and data collection coordinator in a Response to Intervention (RTI) process. Learn about the academic and behavior universal screeners used for all students in kindergarten through fourth grade. Learn how the RTI team responds to data to make informed instructional and systems changes. Watch video clips of an RTI meeting.

Troyce will take participants through a protocol designed to help us examine "blind spots" that may be impeding our ability to bring about the changes we so want via RtI and other processes.  Adapted from work by Kegan, City, et al, the session will surface helpful insights for leaders committed to improving schools and their own effectiveness, as well as providing suggestions for how to overcome our "immunities to change."

Effective implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI) in schools is primarily a leadership challenge. RtI is primarily a framework for delivering Really Terrific Instruction to each and every student. As leaders, the way we organize for improvement, the ways we engage and support our staff, the leadership choices we make are all related to successful implementation. Fortunately, much has been learned about leading RtI implementation in recent years. This presentation will provide an overview of leading RtI implementation at the school level. Lessons learned from the RtI literature and from the school of hard knocks will be provided with honesty, humility and a healthy dose of humor.

"Fierce Conversations: Seven Principles to Assist in Implementation of RtI" Garden Room

As you think about institutionalizing RTI in your district, what are the conversations you need to be having to accomplish this very important work?  What barriers exist for the students we serve as a result of failed conversations?  If the conversation is the relationship, it is time to give our attention to  the Seven Principles of Fierce Conversations.  These principles have the capacity to change the successful outcomes for our students, one conversation at a time.

"Little by Little: Instructional Coaching through RTI"  Ballroom 3

Learn how one district uses instructional coaching strategies and language to engage colleagues in differentiated professional development that supports professional practice, purposeful instruction, and improved student success for all. Working within Professional Learning Committee frameworks, coaches work one-on-one, in collaborative teams, with school leadership, and with district administrators.  Coaches connect with teachers and paraprofessionals in ways that celebrate and validate their work but also stretch them professionally. Learn the challenges and successes along the way as we improve student learning through instructional coaching.

Professional Learning Communities use process and protocol to analyze student work. In this overview, we describe a system that uses student formative data to inform the teacher in order to target instruction, design lessons, focus the RTI process, maximize time, and engage students in learning.

"Using Data to Implement RTI"  Ballroom 1

This session will provide an overview of the different types of assessment/data used within an RtI system. The focus will be on identifying universal screening and progress monitoring assessments in the area of reading. Critical features of each type of assessment will be reviewed along with what questions these types of assessments assist in answering.

"Creating Student Success through the Data Team Process"  Ballroom 2

In Mason City, Professional Learning Communities are the “what” of school improvement and the implementation of the Data Team Process is the “how” that has created the conditions in which all teachers in a building assume responsibility for the learning of all students.  Data team members share a common learning goal, routinely analyze student data based on common formative assessments, and collectively engage in shared inquiry into best practice.  In this session you will learn about the what and why of the data team process as well as the commitments this district has made in order  to achieve full implementation of the Data Team Process.  

"Got Data, Now What?!"  Ballroom 3

Given the increased attention on using data efficiently and effectively for improving learning, there are several areas that may cause confusion. This session will iaddress severeal of these, including 1) how to tell when a change is statistically significant, 2) understanding and interpreting standard scores fromt the Iowa Assessment, 3) converting standard scores fromt he old ITBS to the new Iowa Assessments, and 4) tools for asking effective questions to get to root causes in data analysis.  We'll also explore ways to coach PLCs as they monitor and evaluate attempts to improve learning.  

"Creating a Presence: Advocacy for Education in Iowa"  Garden Room

As educators, we routinely dialogue about the role of education at the state level and its impact on the local education agencies.  It is time to move from dialogue to conversation, from apathy to action.  This session will focus on concrete strategies that create a presence and a voice for educators in Iowa.
